As I mentioned in my post on our family curriculum, our read-alouds take the most time of each school day. The seatwork for my 1st grade girl this year will take about 30 minutes. The reading and math lessons will take the most time out of all of our subjects.
I will be reading aloud all of my 1st grader’s work until at least the end of our second term (of three). She is learning to read this year and she is very excited to be able to read the books we have lying around the house!
Bible
I want my students to learn about the Bible in several different ways. I want them to learn it as a Book of history, as a Book of theology (through catechism work), and as a living literature Book. My choices reflect these different categories.
Bible Treasures 2 from Christian Liberty Press
Follow and Do Catechism set from Concordia Publishing House (once a week)
The Story Bible from Concordia Publishing House - I will read the first half of this Bible aloud to her this year
Language Arts
This year our focus is on learning to read! My 1st grader can’t wait. Since I wait until 1st grade to start reading lessons, we are able to push through the reading curriculum a little quicker than if we started in Kindergarten.
First Start Reading books A-E from Memoria Press
StoryTime Treasures from Memoria Press (after we finish First Start)
1st Grade readers from Christian Light Education
Usborne Very First Reading series
First Steps reader from Milestone Books
Writeshop A - we use this very loosely. We read the examples given, check out books from the library as we can, and practice narrating stories they suggest. But we don’t do any of the written activities.
Queen Homeschool Printing with Pictures A & B
Math and Logical Thinking
We have been using the Critical Thinking Co. math and logic. Last year this 1st grader wanted to do Mathematical Reasoning and TGTB math, so we did, and she loved it. This year I asked her to just pick one math, but she wants to do both, so I added the second as her challenge subject (see below).
The Good and the Beautiful Math 1 (I have the older version - we don’t write in books so I can save them from year to year…sometimes I put worksheets in dry erase sleeves and sometimes we write answers on a dry erase board.)
Building Thinking Primary, second half (we did the first half in Kindergarten) from Critical Thinking Co.
Myself and Others 2 from Memoria Press
Language and Creative Arts
My children are all required to play at least 2 musical instruments, one of them being piano since I teach group piano lessons in our home. The 3rd grader has music theory homework, but until that age my children’s music “homework” is just remembering to practice every day.
Practice piano and Alfred Complete Drum Course
Artpac 1 (I let my children choose from several different art/drawing curricula each year)
Hey Andrew! Greek Level 1
Challenge Subject: Extra Math
So far this student loves, loves, loves her math. So we’ll add on a little extra for fun!
Mathematical Reasoning A (this is a year behind her current level so she can work independently)
Read-aloud Dates
Since I have decided to implement read-aloud dates with my 3rd grader, the younger ones wanted to participate, too! Here is what we will be doing for her once-a-week read-aloud dates with me.
Our 24 Family Ways by Clay and Sally Clarkson (we will do the first 12 this year)
Laying Down the Rails from Simply Charlotte Mason (I have used these to make a weekly tracker journal for her to work on developing the habits I picked for her)
True Girl Bible Study: Ruth (she will join my 3rd grader for read-aloud dates next summer to do this study)
Yell & Tell (for girls) by Debi Pearl
Wisdom for Little Girls by Elizabeth George
Good Pictures, Bad Pictures Jr. by Kristen Jensen
A few read-alouds from this Beautiful Feet character unit
And that’s it for 1st grade! It can seem like a lot, but her seatwork will take less than 30 minutes, depending on how long her reading lesson is that day. This girl is going to love to read so I’m excited to see what she can accomplish after she has that skill mastered at the end of the year.
Do you have a 1st grader this year? What curriculum will you use in your classroom?
